At the Mountain Heritage Center, students are at the heart of what we do. Whether you're a graduate assistant, intern, work-study student, or volunteer, you’ll gain hands-on experience in a professional museum setting—right here on campus.

We welcome students from all majors and backgrounds and offer opportunities that help you grow your skills, explore your interests, and contribute to meaningful projects that connect the past with the present. From exhibit design and artifact care to educational programming and research, you’ll be part of a dynamic, supportive team.

What makes the experience even more rewarding? You won’t be doing it alone. You’ll join a cohort of fellow student workers who learn and grow together, supported by a dedicated team of museum professionals who are committed to mentoring the next generation of public historians, educators, and cultural leaders.

Gallery Attendants

Looking for a campus job that’s meaningful and fun? As a gallery attendant at the Mountain Heritage Center, you’ll welcome visitors, lead tours, and share the stories of Southern Appalachia. It’s a great way to build skills, connect with the community, and be part of a team that values your voice. As you can see from the list below, you don't have to be a history major to qualify. Graduate Assistants

Get credit for working and learning through a graduate assistantships. Assist with a variety of museum related tasks that can include artifact description, handling, and cleaning; K-12 program support; graphic design; exhibit design, light construction, interior design. Must possess attention to detail; willingness to work alone and in groups; reading and writing skill; and interest in historical research. Collections Assistant

over 10,000 artifacts from across southwestern Appalachia. As a collections assistant, you’ll help care for artifacts, assist with exhibit prep, and support behind-the-scenes work like documentation and research. This role is perfect for detail-oriented students who enjoy working independently and have an interest in history, design, or cultural preservation. Internships

Bring your passion for history, culture, and community to life with a hands-on internship at the Mountain

Heritage Center! Interns earn academic credit while gaining real-world experience in public history, museum work, and heritage education. Educational stipends are available on a limited basis.

 

You’ll take on meaningful projects like artifact care, exhibit design, K–12 programming, graphic design, and more. Interns have come from a variety of majors—Anthropology, English, Higher Education, History, Parks and Recreation—and many have gone on to careers in museums, education, and cultural organizations.
