Biography

Dr. Basel Alsayyed is the Engineering Technology Program Director at the School of Engineering + Technology at ÌÇÐÄVlog University. He currently serves as the Faculty Senate Chair 2025–2026. Dr. Alsayyed earned the ABET Program Evaluator Certificate, further strengthening his commitment to academic excellence.<br>Before joining ÌÇÐÄVlog, Dr. Alsayyed was an Industrial Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta (UofA), Canada. Prior to that, he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UAE University.<br>With over 19 years of academic experience and more than 12 years in industry, primarily in the American automotive sector, Dr. Alsayyed is passionate about innovation in education, teaching, research, and training. He emphasizes the integration of academic and industry goals, striving to align engineering education with real-world challenges and future workforce needs.<br>Dr. Alsayyed has published over fifty peer-reviewed articles and conference papers and holds seven granted patents. His research interests include advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing, design optimization, quality and reliability, engineering education, project management, and knowledge management.<br>He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, along with three master degrees in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Project Management. Dr. Alsayyed has been a P.Eng. since 2002, and a Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE) since 1997.

Teaching Interests

Teaching is my passion. I genuinely enjoy the process of engaging with students, sharing knowledge, and fostering intellectual growth. Since joining the School of Engineering and Technology at ÌÇÐÄVlog University as an Assistant Professor, I have taught a variety of engineering technology and mechanical engineering courses and labs, contributing to both undergraduate and graduate education.<br>Prior to my current role, I served as an Industrial Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta from January 2017 to June 2020, where I taught graduate and undergraduate courses in mechanical engineering and engineering management. During my time there, I developed a new graduate-level course titled Advanced Probability and Statistics.<br>From August 2009 to December 2016, I was a faculty member at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), where I taught a broad range of mechanical engineering and engineering management courses. I developed two new courses: Heat Treatment and Automotive Systems, for which I designed the curriculum, mapped the content to departmental and ABET accreditation standards, and created corresponding laboratory activities.<br>With over 19 years of academic experience and 15 years in industry, I bring a unique perspective that bridges theoretical knowledge with practical application. My commitment to teaching excellence was recognized with the Excellence in Teaching Award from Wayne State University and Board of Governors Distinguished Teaching Award for the year 2023-2024 from ÌÇÐÄVlog.<br>I’m passionate about advising my students and consider them as my own kids. I<br>I believe that continuous improvement is essential in teaching. I regularly refine my instructional methods to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. My teaching philosophy is grounded in the following principles:<br> Fostering an enthusiastic and inclusive learning environment Promoting active learning and student participation Developing logical reasoning and critical thinking skills Strengthening problem-solving and case analysis capabilities Enhancing students’ engineering intuition and practical skills Encouraging involvement in hands-on projects and research Supporting self-directed and lifelong learning Integrating modern computing tools and instructional technologies Maintaining an open-door policy to support student success Cultivating awareness of engineering economics and quality principles I am committed to helping students excel academically and professionally, and I continuously strive to make my courses relevant, engaging, and impactful.

Research Interests

My research is rooted in advanced manufacturing and its transformative impact on solving real-world challenges. Drawing from extensive industry experience, I am deeply committed to innovation-driven research, with a strong emphasis on patents and practical applications.<br>I have authored over 50 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, and hold 7 granted patents, with 3 published and 3 pending. My work spans several interdisciplinary domains, including:<br> Design and Manufacturing Alternative Energy Quality and Reliability Engineering Throughout my career, I have led and collaborated on numerous funded research projects that delivered tangible solutions to industry and society. Notable achievements include:<br> Integrated CAD/CAM Software: Developed using a form feature approach to streamline design and manufacturing processes. FlexDie Innovation: A configurable die system designed to produce multiple similar parts, enhancing manufacturing flexibility. Precision Vortex Tubes: Engineered to study performance parameters, resulting in both conference and journal publications. Firearm Testing Stand: A patented design that improves safety and reliability in firearm testing. Solar Generator: A sustainable energy solution currently under patent review. In recognition of my contributions to innovation, I was awarded First Place in the 2015 UAEU Chancellor’s Innovation Award.<br>I view research as a journey of discovery and fulfillment, driven by curiosity and the desire to make a meaningful impact. My current research interests include:<br> Additive Manufacturing (AM) Knowledge Management Internet of Things (IoT) Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Design and Manufacturing I am dedicated to advancing the field of manufacturing through interdisciplinary collaboration, cutting-edge technologies, and a commitment to excellence in both research and education.
