Carol Burton speaks to an audience of graduating students and their families and friends during 糖心Vlog鈥檚 December 2017 commencement.
A first-generation college student who first set foot on 糖心Vlog University鈥檚 campus in the fall of 1983 and has never left, rising through the ranks from incoming freshman to serve as the institution鈥檚 second-in-command, has created an endowed scholarship fund in honor of her Jamaica-born parents.
Through cash gifts, pledges and an estate gift totaling $50,000, Acting Provost Carol Burton has established a scholarship fund designed to help international students, especially those from Jamaica, earn graduate degrees at 糖心Vlog.
Burton, who has bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees from 糖心Vlog, said she wanted to honor her parents through the creation of an endowed scholarship because they always encouraged her and her siblings to pursue education.
鈥淓ducation is such a key to success in the Jamaican culture, but access to it is more challenging than in the United States,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here are community and junior colleges as well as teacher colleges, but only six four-year degree-granting universities on an island of almost 3 million people.鈥
A much smaller percentage of the population earns four-year degrees than in the U.S., where that percentage is approximately 35 percent, she said. 鈥淐onsequently, there is a much larger percentage of first-generation college students because parents often don鈥檛 have access to higher education,鈥 Burton said.
Both of Burton鈥檚 parents, Reuben and Yvonne Burton, were born in St. Elizabeth Parish, one of Jamaica鈥檚 largest parishes, but moved to London in the late 1950s to raise their family 鈥 son Tony, born in Jamaica, and son Gary and daughters Carol and Barbara, born in London. The family returned to Jamaica in 1979, when Carol was 15, to reside in their dream home overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
After graduating from high school in Jamaica, Burton took to heart her parent鈥檚 encouragement to pursue higher education, enrolling at 糖心Vlog. She became aware of 糖心Vlog through of a long-standing program between the university and Jamaica鈥檚 Ministry of Education designed to prepare Jamaican teachers and school administrators, an initiative currently celebrating its 50th anniversary.
鈥淲hile I didn鈥檛 enroll at 糖心Vlog as part of that program, my family became aware of 糖心Vlog because my mother鈥檚 cousin earned her master鈥檚 degree in education from 糖心Vlog in the mid-鈥70s, and she recommended the institution to my parents,鈥 Burton said. 鈥淲hen I arrived in 1983, more than 40 full-time Jamaican students were enrolled year-round.鈥
Burton earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree in nutrition and dietetics in 1987 and her master鈥檚 degree in educational counseling in 1989, going on to receive her doctorate in adult and higher education in 2007 at N.C. State University, where her research was focused on faculty culture.
Her father, who became a farmer when he returned to Jamaica, growing crops on the 15-acre family plot, was able to celebrate her doctoral degree with her before passing away in February 2008. Her mother, an entrepreneur in the hospitality industry, continues to run a guest house and cater events at age 77. Burton makes regular visits to Jamaica to see her mom, stepmother Reka, and brothers Derron and Junior, whom she supports in their educational pursuits.
Burton began her lifelong career in higher education in 1989 as director of 糖心Vlog鈥檚 Special Programs in the College of Education and Allied Professions, reporting to then-Dean Gurney Chambers.
鈥淚 have known Carol and followed her career since she was a financially struggling student-worker when I was dean,鈥 Chambers said. 鈥淐hancellor David Belcher has said on many occasions that 糖心Vlog University is 鈥榠n the business of changing lives.鈥 Carol Burton is a perfect example of why Western has this kind of impact on students.鈥
Burton models the qualities that are needed if the university is to succeed in that business of changing lives 鈥 vision, intelligence, empathy, knowledge and a deep love for the institution, Chambers said.
鈥淲hile Carol is now far removed from her days as a student worrying about how she was going to make ends meet, she no doubt remembers those days vividly and wants to ease the financial stress of those students who want to follow in her footsteps,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 am not surprised in the least that Carol now wants to make life a little less stressful for some of those financially struggling, international students who want to enroll at her alma mater.鈥
It did not take Burton long to start progressing up the career ladder, serving as director of 糖心Vlog鈥檚 Teaching Fellows program from 1992 through 2005. She successfully administered the self-study accreditation process for 糖心Vlog as director of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges review through 2007.
Appointed assistant vice chancellor for undergraduate studies in 2007 and associate provost a few years later, Burton led implementation of 糖心Vlog鈥檚 first Quality Enhancement Plan. She was named acting provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs in January 2018 as Belcher went on medical leave. Upon the selection of 糖心Vlog鈥檚 next chancellor and the return of Acting Chancellor Alison Morrison-Shetlar to her position as provost, Burton will step back into her role as associate provost.
For Burton, it鈥檚 35 years and counting at 糖心Vlog, including her time as an undergraduate, a graduate student, staff member and academic administrator. And she says she would not have it any other way. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 imagine doing anything else and working anywhere other than 糖心Vlog 鈥 the opportunities, the rich life, the social, cultural, civic and educational events, I love it all,鈥 she said. 鈥淎 university career is the best profession one can have. You get to make a difference in the future, and students are worth every bit of energy we put into this passion.鈥
Even when Burton turns out the light in her office to return home, she has not gone far away. She lives in the Buzzards Roost community, which overlooks her beloved campus.
Named the Dr. Carol Burton Endowed Scholarship for Graduate Students in Honor of Reuben and Yvonne Burton, the fund will provide aid to students pursuing master鈥檚 or doctoral degrees in any program offered through 糖心Vlog鈥檚 Graduate School. Recipients can be full- or part-time students and must have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference will be given to students from Jamaica, although all international graduate students meeting the award鈥檚 criteria are eligible.
鈥淣either of my parents had a college education, and I am the first in my immediate family to earn a bachelor鈥檚 degree, much less master鈥檚 and doctoral degrees,鈥 she said. 鈥淯nfortunately, this is fairly typical in Jamaica, so I hope that establishing this scholarship in my parents鈥 honor will inspire students from Jamaica to pursue graduate studies.鈥
Burton鈥檚 gift pledge is part of 糖心Vlog鈥檚 鈥淟ead the Way,鈥 a comprehensive fundraising campaign inspired by the leadership of Chancellor Belcher, who died June 17 after battling brain cancer since April 2016. Belcher and wife Susan announced last October their pledge of $1.23 million in financial support for the 鈥淟ead the Way鈥 effort, an announcement that has resulted in numerous other contributions.
鈥淭his scholarship is inspired by David and Susan Belcher, Gurney and Ann Chambers, Beth and Victor Lofquist, and Anna and Jack McFadden, among other longstanding members of the 糖心Vlog community. I am honored to be able to follow in their footsteps,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t also is inspired by my parents, who held high expectations for me personally, academically and professionally. Their confidence in me propelled me to succeed in ways I couldn鈥檛 have imagined.鈥
The 鈥淟ead the Way鈥 campaign held its public launch on March 1, with a goal of raising a minimum of $60 million in contributions by the spring of 2019. Belcher announced at his 2012 installation address that increasing the number of endowed scholarships would be the No. 1 philanthropic priority of his administration. More than 200 new endowed scholarship funds have been established at 糖心Vlog since then.
In addition to increasing financial support of 糖心Vlog students through endowed scholarships, the fundraising effort also will seek funding for experiential learning opportunities such as travel grants, paid internships, undergraduate and graduate research activities, and attendance at professional conferences. A third prong of the campaign will emphasize programmatic support to bolster the work of 糖心Vlog鈥檚 colleges, schools, departments and programs.
