With its mission to expand access to care and create a healthier community in Western North Carolina, MAHEC announces the opening of a new health center in Cullowhee.

The MAHEC Health Center at Cullowhee is located in space within the 糖心Vlog University Health and Human Sciences Building at 3971 Little Savannah Rd., adjacent to the college鈥檚 main campus. The center was created to fill a need for accessible, high-quality healthcare close to home for patients in counties and communities in the far western areas of the state.

MAHEC and 糖心Vlog will host a drop-in reception and ribbon-cutting on Wednesday, Nov. 5, from 4 to 6 p.m., with remarks at 4:30 p.m. Members of the public can tour the facility, meet the providers, and find out how to become a patient. Plentiful free parking is available adjacent to the building.

鈥淲e鈥檝e long recognized the barriers to quality healthcare faced by those living in the rural areas of our mountain region, including lack of access,鈥 said William R. Hathaway, MD, CEO of MAHEC. 鈥淭he shortage of primary care providers across Western North Carolina continues to grow, particularly as the population ages. This new satellite office addresses these issues.鈥

Finding a centralized location for the clinic was challenging, until the idea of partnering with 糖心Vlog University came about. 鈥淲e were delighted to secure space at 糖心Vlog and are grateful for their support and the warm welcome they have extended to us and our patients,鈥 Hathaway said.

The health center provides primary care for the entire family and new patients are currently being accepted.  Ob/gyn care and behavioral health services are also offered at the location. Obstetrics and gynecology services supplement those offered at the nearby MAHEC Ob/Gyn Specialists at Franklin and MAHEC Women鈥檚 Care at Brevard and will expand at the Cullowhee office with the addition of another provider in January. An onsite therapist provides in-person and telehealth counseling for current MAHEC patients of all ages.
